I have a dental implant that is still in the healing phase after surgery. I don’t have the crown on it yet. It started hurting a bit yesterday. Today the spot seems spongy and now the side of my face is hurting. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

Emily,
I want you to get this looked at. Start with the dentist who placed your dental implant. But, if they can’t be reached, this is worth a trip to the emergency dentist. It’s possible an infection has started.
You don’t want this to take hold. It could cost you the entire implant. That would mean re-doing the procedure along with the addition of bone grafting. Plus, if dental infections spread, they can get deadly quickly. Your jaw is close to both your heart and brain.
A dentist will look at what is going on and take the appropriate steps. If caught early enough there is usually a simple solution.
