My life has turned upside down in the last few years. I had a beautiful smile, but a series of life-threatening illnesses has ruined my smile. I went to see a dentist, but was surprised at the strong anxiety it caused. Then he spent most of the appointment lecturing me about the condition of my teeth. I tried explaining, but he didn’t care. Now I feel guilty and scared. Is there anything I can do about this anxiety?

Bella,
Please don’t feel bad about what’s happening to your teeth. It’s not your fault. Don’t let the dentist guilt you either. There are many illnesses and medications that can reek havoc on your teeth. Your dentist should have understood that and been more compassionate.
There are ways to get your smile taken care of, even with the dental anxiety you’re feeling. What you need is a sedation dentist. They’re generally more willing to work with anxious patients. Not to mention more compassionate.
If you get oral conscious sedation, you will have a completely pain free appointment. You’ll also find you’ll be able to get more work done in one appointment than normal.
