I wanted to get white fillings on my tooth that developed a cavity, especially because it would be a little more visible than most. However, my dentist said they aren’t as good and he doesn’t recommend them. This may sound mean, but I’m wondering if he is saying that because he is old and close to retirement and prefers to do things “the old fashioned way”. White fillings have been around for a while now and my people seem quite satisfied with them. Do you have some advice on how I can sway my dentist?

Rachel,
I don’t agree with your dentist, but my suggestion is you don’t try to sway him. White (composite) fillings require specialized training that he doesn’t have. This could end up being a disaster.
Your dentist probably said what he did about the fillings because it was easier to critisize them than to admit to a patient he doesn’t have the training.
White fillings end up strenghtening your teeth more than their silver counterparts, which can actually weaken the tooth structure.
This doesn’t mean you can’t have white fillings. Consider calling a hollistic dentist. They will always be mercury-free, which means that won’t place silver amalgam fillings.
