I have pretty severe osteoporosis. It’s even causing my teeth to have problems. I need a lot of work, but I’m worried about the sensitivity. If I have osteoporosis does that mean I’m not a candidate for sedation dentistry? I can’t imagine going through this awake. Also, will I be at risk for a fall afterward? I can’t afford a broken anything right now.

Dear Lucy,
I have some good news for you. You’re an ideal candidate for dental sedation. It will be very helpful to you to get your needed dental work done without having to deal with the intense sensitivity that comes from osteoporosis. In fact, you’ll be completely relaxed. Most patients even sleep through the procedure.
I’d schedule a consultative appointment with your dentist. You will want to discuss any medications you’re on and the status of your osteoporosis. This gives him (or her) time to make preparations for any precautions necessary. It may take a smidge longer for you to get to your treatment appointment, but you’ll be glad all precautions were taken. It will make everything go smoother and lower the risk of complications.
We always ask sedation patient’s to have a person available to drive them home and spend the day with them, regardless of their health status. It’s even more important in your situation. The sedation makes you woozy and not too stable on your feet. Plan on spending the day on the couch. You can binge watch Netflix or have a pile of books and DVDs ready. Your companion can help you get anything you may need.
It’s good that you’re being proactive about your health care. Your situation can play havoc on your teeth. If you left it out of fear, you’d likely end up with an emergency dental situation. That’s even more dangerous in your condition.
